Revenge Porn Is Becoming a Criminal Offense in U.K.
Revenge porn is becoming a criminal offense in the U.K.
Parliament has passed legislation that says anyone who distributes sexual images without the subject’s consent – and with the intent to cause harm – could be punished with a fine and up to two years in prison.
The debate has grown over the years along with the proliferation of digital cameras and smartphones, and the ease of distribution online.
“It seemed to me that there really was a gap in the law which had been there for a long time, obviously, but had only really become important,” said Julian Huppert, a Liberal Democrat member of parliament who sponsored the legislation. “Now once an image has been put up, it can be replicated very easily.”
The term revenge pornography generally refers to sexual images posted online or shared to shame or get revenge on someone, such as an ex-lover who posts private images that might have been taken consensually but weren’t meant for a wider audience.
